Myths & Facts about Clinical Hypnosis

Many people have a lot of questions about Clinical or 'Eriksonian' Hypnotherapy.  Hypnosis is actually very old and was first used by Dr. Mesmer in the 1700's.  Dr Milton Erikson was the first psychiatrist who took hypnosis and paired it with psychotherapy to help people heal.  This is a type of psychotherapy requires training and is regulated.  It is nothing like what you may have seen on stage or in the movies.

Is there a difference between Clinical Hypnotherapy and Guided Meditation?

Yes.

Clinical Hypnotherapy is a psychotherapy and has both an assessment and a treatment component.  A Clinical Hypnotherapist uses a therapeutic relationship, talk-therapy, and trance-based interventions to provide help with thinking, feeling, behavioral, and social problems - what we call suffering.  It is individual, and unique to you.

Guided Meditation is a teacher-led meditation exercise that uses visual images and breathing techniques.  It usually has the goal of relaxation, reducing stress, or improving sleep, but can be used for many things.  You can do this in person, on an app, or by using audio recordings. It can stand alone, or be used along with other types of therapy. It is not the same as hypnotherapy and is not usually unique to you, although it can still be very helpful.

Can anyone receive Clinical Hypnotherapy?

Yes and No.  All hypnosis is self-hypnosis.  So, all people have the ability. However, people who are experiencing  problems emotionally regulating themselves need to stabilize before this therapy can be available to them. That's ok - because we can work together to create that safe place for you, first.

I have PTSD - Can I do Clinical Hypnotherapy?

Yes, probably.  In hypnotherapy, you learn how to enter a lower, slower brainwave state to heal.  Some people who have PTSD can dissociate (or down-regulate), which is similar but not the same as a trance state (which is intentional).  But if you aren't emotionally regulating well in other ways, you will need to stabilize before this therapy can be available to you

Is Clinical Hypnotherapy good for Anxiety?

Yes. Clinical hypnosis can be used in the treatment of Anxiety, OCD, Trauma, Pain Management, Habits & Addictions, Low Motivation and other issues.

Will I have 'homework'?

Yes!  All hypnosis is self-hypnosis and just like when you learned to tie your shoes, you had to practice it before you could do it without having to think about it.  The more you are willing and able to practice, the easier it will be for you to use self-hypnosis as part of your own healing.  This usually only takes a few minutes a day and is part of the healing journey.  You should plan to practice daily, between each session.
