How We Help

Areas of Expertise

Psychotherapy

Cynthia Forrest is a Registered Psychotherapist, or RP, licensed to practice in the province of Ontario.  Cynthia provides talk therapy to people who live in Ontario.  At this time, all appointments are being offered in a virtual psychotherapy format.

You do not need to know what type of therapy would be most helpful for you, before you begin to talk with a therapist.  It can be helpful, but there is a lot of misinformation - some of it well intended - that people are exposed to, especially in social media.  Please talk to a therapist about what you are experiencing so that you have help to decide what therapy options are good ones for you.  There is more than one therapy option for every experience and being an informed consumer will help you to connect with the service that will be most helpful for you.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT, is a well-researched, proven type of psychotherapy.  In CBT, we look at how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors link with each other; and how these links are presenting or creating the problem you are experiencing.  Then we work to link them differently.  This type of therapy is effective for many problems, including (but not limited to) anxiety, stress, depression, trauma, and more.

Solution-Focused Therapy

Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) is a type of therapy that focuses on the solution, not the problem, that you are experiencing.  You are the expert in your own life and my job is to guide you to find the your solution.  This type of therapy is effective for many problems, including (but not limited to): anxiety or stress, depression, family conflict, relationship problems, trauma, and more.  It can be more brief than other therapies, but that doesn't make it less effective!

Cynthia's Approach

Healing is an individual process.  It is a unique path that each of us follows in order to live our lives in a better, happier healthier way.

Cynthia's approach to therapy is eclectic and she primarily uses CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), and will add small touches of other therapies, when required. Cynthia is a trainer in Motivational Interviewing.  She uses a Harm Reduction approach to support people having difficulty with alcohol or cannabis misuse. She also has training in other therapies.

Cynthia generally has a 'lead from behind' approach.  To you, this should sound like you are just having a conversation.  You are the expert in you, Cynthia is your guide - to help navigate rougher terrain.

All therapy has a goal and a plan and you don't need to know that before you start.  You will develop that together - over the first 1-2 sessions - and as you get to know each other.

People are individual. So, therapy needs to be individual and tailored to you.  It should never be an expectation that you try to fit a therapy in order to get help.
